I am in the middle of the book "Tales of the Madman Underground" by John Barnes. My understanding of this book is a bit fuzzy, but it is still a very interesting book. So far, we meet the main character, Karl Shoemaker a high school senior living in Lightsburg, Ohio. Oh, right, did I mention his dad is dead, he has 5 jobs, and a drunk mother? Pretty bad if you ask me. He is also forced to take part in the Madman Underground, a group therapy for "special" kids during school hours. So, if you think about it, he has it pretty bad off. This is why I believe Karl Shoemaker is much more mature than people think he is.
I think this because Karl is always thought of as a loser with no life and hardly any friends. Most of the people who think this are the "cool" kids who's lives are perfect. They would care less of someone like Karl and they just push him off like he is nothing. They don't know the struggle he's been through and that he is going through now. The fact that he has 5 jobs and has to take care of his lazy, good-for-nothing mom 24/7 is enough for me to believe that he is an extremely mature man. He must keep up doing homework, take part in 5 jobs, and maintain some sort of social life while supporting his family. How could you believe this guy isn't unbelievably mature?
So, in all, Karl is pretty much what and ideal mature person should be like. Responsible. He must juggle doing many very difficult tasks everyday. I don't believe many people could do what Karl does in a week. It must be the most stressful thing ever. I now that I myself couldn't do this.

I really like your title. It really expresses what your blog is going to be about. Good Job.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Pablo.
ReplyDeleteI read the same book and it is one of my favorites. I am going to have to disagree with you on this though. You said that he has a bad life because he works five jobs, is forced to go to therapy, and has a drunk mother. First, he works the five jobs on his own will. He just wants to save up money. Second, he chooses to go to therapy because he has become very fond of the people in the group, they are his best friends. Third, Karl's mother isn't drunk at home. She just goes out at night. Also, Karl admits several times in the book that he loves his mother very much and looks past that.
On the other hand, you brought of some great points and did a great post.
Yes but my point is that Karl is mature doing 5 jobs willing seems pretty mature to me. He goes to therapy because he likes the people there, that's true. But there is a reason he got in that therapy group the first time. Finally, Karl's mom isn't drunk at home that is true and I should have added that. My point for her was that she was the kid and Karl was the adult in this issue.
Deletethank you for commenting on my post though, I am honored
Hey Pablo, great job,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this, with the little I know about Karl, I think he's too "cool" for these other people. His maturity makes him too cool for these people, and I think he's better off with his friends in therapy that Milo brought up.
